How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in Stripe
1. Log into Your Stripe Account
- Open your web browser and go to dashboard.stripe.com/login.
- Enter your email address and password.
- Click “Log in” to access your Stripe Dashboard.
2. Go to Security Settings
- In the top-right corner, click on your profile icon.
- Select “Profile” from the dropdown menu.
- Scroll down to the Security section.
- Click “Turn on two-step authentication”.
3. Choose a Verification Method
You will be asked to select a preferred method for authentication. There are three options:
A. Authentication App (Recommended)
- Click “Use an authentication app”.
- Open Google Authenticator, Authy, or another authentication app.
- Scan the QR code displayed on your screen.
- Enter the 6-digit code from your app into Stripe.
- Click “Enable”.
✅ Tip: If scanning the QR code doesn’t work, you can manually enter the secret key into your authentication app.
B. SMS Verification
- Click “Use SMS”.
- Enter your phone number.
- Click “Send verification code”.
- Check your phone for the 6-digit code.
- Enter the code into Stripe and click “Enable”.
⚠️ Note: SMS authentication is less secure than an authentication app, so it’s recommended to use an app if possible.
C. Security Key (Advanced Users)
- Click “Use a security key”.
- Connect your hardware security key (e.g., YubiKey) to your computer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to register the key.
4. Save Your Backup Codes
- After setting up 2FA, Stripe will generate backup codes.
- Copy and store these codes in a safe place (e.g., a password manager).
- Click “Done” to complete the setup.
5. Test Your 2FA Setup
- Log out of Stripe.
- Try logging back in.
- Enter your email and password.
- When prompted, enter the 6-digit code from your authentication app or SMS.
- If successful, your 2FA is now active!
✅ Two-factor authentication is now enabled, making your Stripe account more secure. If you ever lose access to your 2FA method, use backup codes or contact Stripe Support.
