How to Manage Payouts in Stripe

Payouts in Stripe are the payments transferred from your Stripe account to your connected bank account. Sellers can choose between automatic payouts, where funds are transferred on a set schedule, or manual payouts, where the seller controls when and how much to withdraw.

Here’s a detailed guide on how to work with Payouts in Stripe, including how to view previous payouts, change your payout schedule, and more.

1. Understanding Automatic vs Manual Payouts

Automatic Payouts:

  • Customizable Setting: Unlike before, Sellers now have the flexibility to set their own payout schedule. You can choose to receive payouts:
    • Daily
    • Weekly
    • Monthly
  • Important: All available funds that are ready to be withdrawn (i.e., funds that are confirmed and cleared) will be included in the payout. When you set up your automatic payouts, the system will automatically send the available balance to your connected bank account according to the chosen frequency (daily, weekly, or monthly).

How to Set Up Automatic Payouts:

  1. Log into your Stripe account at https://dashboard.stripe.com.
  2. In the left sidebar, click on “Settings” (⚙️ gear icon).
  3. Under “Payouts and transfers”, click on “Payout schedule”.
  4. Choose your preferred payout frequency:
    • Daily – Funds are transferred to your bank account daily.
    • Weekly – Funds are transferred weekly.
    • Monthly – Funds are transferred once a month.
  5. Once selected, Stripe will automatically send the available funds to your bank account based on the frequency you’ve chosen.

Manual Payouts:

If you prefer more control over when and how much money is transferred to your bank account, you can switch to manual payouts.

How to Switch to Manual Payouts:

  1. Go to “Payouts” in the Settings menu.
  2. In the payout schedule section, select Manual payouts.
  3. After switching to manual payouts, you will be able to initiate payouts manually whenever you want. You will also have control over the amount you want to withdraw. You are not required to withdraw the entire balance available in your account—you can choose to withdraw any portion of the funds.

2. How to View and Manage Payouts

Once you are familiar with how payouts work, you can check your payout history and manage any payouts made from your Stripe account.

Viewing Your Payout History:

  1. Log into Stripe.
  2. In the left sidebar, click on “Payouts”.
  3. On the Payouts page, you will see a list of all payouts made to your connected bank account. This includes:
    • Date of the payout
    • Amount transferred
    • Status (Paid, Pending, or Failed)
  4. To see more details about a specific payout, click on the payout date. You will be able to view:
    • The payment sources (the specific payments that contributed to this payout)
    • Any fees associated with the payout
    • Bank account details (if you have multiple bank accounts connected)

Tracking Transfers to Your Bank Account:

  • To check successful transfers, look for a “Paid” status under your payout list.
  • If a payout failed, you will see a “Failed” status. You can click on the payout to see the reason for failure (e.g., incorrect bank details, insufficient funds, etc.).

3. Initiating Manual Payouts

Once you have set up manual payouts, you have full control over when and how much money you withdraw.

How to Initiate a Manual Payout:

  1. Go to the “Payouts” section from your Stripe Dashboard.
  2. Click on the “Pay Out Funds” button.
  3. Select the amount you wish to withdraw.
  4. Choose the bank account to which you want to send the funds (if you have multiple bank accounts linked).
  5. Click “Pay Out” to transfer the funds to your bank account.
  6. After initiating the payout, you can check the status of your payout on the same page.

4. Important Notes About Payouts:

  • Processing Time: It typically takes 2-7 business days for payouts to appear in your bank account, depending on your bank and the payout schedule.
  • Automatic vs Manual Changes: If you switch to manual payouts, you will no longer receive automatic payouts based on the schedule you set. You will need to manually request payouts whenever you want to withdraw funds.
  • Fees: Stripe charges a processing fee for each transaction, which is deducted before the payout is made. This is displayed when you view your payout details.

5. Troubleshooting Payout Issues:

If there are any issues with your payouts, here are a few things to check:

  1. Verify your bank account details: Ensure the bank account information in your Stripe account is correct.
  2. Check for payout limits or restrictions: Some platforms may limit the amount of money you can transfer based on account activity or verification status.
  3. Look for failed payouts: If a payout is marked as “Failed”, Stripe will provide the reason for the failure. You can correct the issue and retry the payout.

By following this guide, you can manage and track your payouts in Stripe easily, whether you are using automatic payouts with a flexible schedule or prefer manual payouts to control your withdrawals.
